Did Carnival Cruise Lines Invent Onboard Fun?
Unless you’re brain dead or have been locked away in a remote, sparsely populated speck on the planet with no personal contact, you’re well aware of Carnival Cruise Lines. The Miami-based company is the world’s largest cruise operator and although its emergence on the scene of international players gave it a reputation as almost a swinging singles at-sea constant party, the company has evolved offering cruises tailored for and targeted to people from all walks of life. Sure, some ships still retain disco balls swirling over dance floors, but the company continues to adapt and change as styles emerge and tastes evolve.
Carnival Cruise Lines is credited by critics as the innovator, originator or developer of many cruising features or attributes now common throughout the market. One was introduction of top notch cuisine. Originally, cruises were not noted for sought after meals or gourmet anything. Carnival changed all that by attracting talented food service directors and chefs incorporating haute cuisine as a natural cruise element.
The company also became noted as the developer of on-board children’s programs offering beyond basic babysitting activity that engaged children in activities stimulating curiosity while expanding learning opportunities as well.
Additionally, Carnival Cruise Lines was the first to expand its sailing itinerary beyond the traditional Caribbean vacations offering consumers alternatives to exotic locales like Alaska. It finally entered the ever growing European cruise market in 2002. The company eventually spent its first full European season in 2005 and is now a major player in that market.
Today, the fastest-growing segment of the cruise consumer market is U.S. vacationers seeking mini-cruises – three to five night trips. Carnival has captured more than 50 percent of this market which includes many families seeking these short vacations. The company has refitted many of their Fantasy-class ships to accommodate family cruising with increased cabin space, additional bathrooms plus creative children’s areas including on-board water parks and other amusement features.
Other innovations Carnival Cruise Lines is credited with include offering the first tobacco-free ship, the Carnival Paradise. It was the first company to construct a vessel exceeding 100,000- tons as it kept adding additional features like surfing pools and rock climbing. Other added features now include robes in all cabins along with installation of Comfort Bed brand sleep systems incorporating plush mattresses, high thread-count linens and top line pillows adding to increased passenger comfort.
Once embarking solely from the Miami, Fla. port, Carnival also was the first cruise line to expand beyond a one-port offering and now embarks from the additional U.S. ports of New Orleans, Jacksonville, Galveston, Port Canaveral, Charleston, Baltimore and New York. It successfully marketed itself as the drive-to-friendly cruise line with departure locations close to home.
After successfully marketing east coast departure ports, Carnival Cruise Lines built a west coast operation out of Long Beach, Calif., to target cruise offerings along the Mexican west coast.
Additionally, Carnival Cruise Lines remains an industry leader offering package pricing discounts through national organizations like AARP and maintains competitive packaging for wedding, anniversary and other romance-based targeted markets.
